Programma

The course will be structured in three modules.

1. The first module will offer an introduction to the different concepts of equality, the prevalent theories of anti-discrimination law and will provide an overview of the U.S., European, and other national and international anti-discrimination law systems and legal sources

2. The second module will analyze the key concepts of equality law exploring the origins and characteristics of the prohibited forms of discrimination (namely: direct/indirect discrimination; harassment; discrimination by declaration; discrimination by association)

3. Particular attention will then be paid to the developments in the protection from discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, and disability at the European level in light of the most significant domestic constitutional case-law as well as through the landmark decisions delivered by the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

4. The fourth module will be dedicated to the concept of "intersectionality" in feminist theory with the aim of understanding how gender, race, sexuality, age etc... can overlap, creating compounding experiences of discrimination.

4. The final part of the course will be dedicated to the role played by NGOs, equality bodies, and civil society associations in advancing and enforcing anti-discrimination law through their advocacy, lobbying, and litigation strategies activities.
