Obiettivi formativi
The course aims at developing the students' knowledge of the main features of international organisations and some critical skills for a good understanding of interstate institutional cooperation.
The course also aims at developing the students' knowledge and understanding of the United Nations.
Students will improve their oral, communication, problem-solving and research skills.

By the end of the Course students should: possess a thorough understanding of the functioning of international organisations (IOs) in general and of the United Nations in particular; have a comprehensive understanding of IOs institutional structure and of the United Nations in particular; be able to appreciate the causes of the challenges faced by an international organisation born after the Second World War; discuss the role of the United Nations in the international legal system and current geopolitical scenario.
Expected learning outcomes (according to Dublin descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of the main topics analyzed during the course
Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to apply the knowledge acquired to understand relevant reading materials and news, to participate in a discussion or a conference, to understand experts
Making judgements: ability to recognize relevant research materials, to identify a research question, to structure the content of an essay, to interpret sources and to provide an answer to the research question
Communication: ability to communicate the acquired knowledge, demonstrating an adequate capacity of synthesis and abstraction and using a clear and rigorous language (grammar included)
Lifelong learning skills: acquisition of an effective study method, ability to identify and interpret different problems and texts.

The Course consists of two Modules.
The First Module, taught by prof. Viterbo, aims at providing students with skills and knowledge on “International Organisations Law”.
- The rise of multilateralism and of International Organisations
- The legal position of IOs
- The constituent instruments
- Membership
- Institutional structure
- The powers of IOs
- Privileges and immunities of IOs
- The responsibility of IOs
The Second Module, taught by prof. Minervini, focuses on the "Law and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals".
- The international judicial function
- Inter-State arbitration
- The International Court of Justice
- International economic courts and tribunals
- Dispute settlement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea
- The future of international courts and tribunals

Modalità di insegnamento
The course will be taught through the traditional learning model based on frontal lectures as well as through interactive lectures, group work actvities, case law analysis and role playing simulations.
Teaching and reading materials will be made available through the Moodle platform. The platform will also be used to organise group activities.
It is therefore essential and compulsory that all the students enrol on the Moodle page of the course to have full access to studying materials and for communication purposes.
Lectures will be held in the Second Semester on Thursday and Friday h. 8-11 at the Campus Luigi Einaudi.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
Exam modalities for ATTENDING students
- Attending students will take a written exam with open questions on the teaching and reading materials provided through the Moodle platform. Group activities organized by both prof. Viterbo and prof. Minervini give participants the chance to gain extra points. A presentation of these activities will take place in the first week of the course.
- Students can sit the exam under the modalities for ATTENDING students only in May, June and July 2026.
- Attending students MUST MANDATORILY attend the classes of 20th of March and 10th of April
Exam modalities for NON-ATTENDING students
- Written exam with open questions (students will have to provide an answer to 3 questions out of the 4 questions that will be proposed) on the selected Chapters of the two textbooks.
- Klabbers read pp. 1-38, study pp. 41-70, 91-114, 132-156, 209-242, 305-339.
- Merrils, De Brabandere: read pp. 1-37, study pp. 132-171, 194-260, 261-309, 413-438.

Attività di supporto
The Moodle e-learning page of the course is a key instrument. Students are expected to enrol in the Moodle page of the course and to check it regularly.
Additional reading materials and resources (selection of book chapters, papers, documents, videos, etc.) will be made available through the Moodle platform.
Any update and communication will be notified to students through Moodle. It is, therefore, necessary that students enrol on the Moodle platform, to have access to reading materials and official communications.
