Obiettivi formativi
The aim of the course is to introduce students to an adequate knowledge of the notion of criminal proceedings and of the principles that characterize it from an European perspective.

At the end of the course students will be asked to:
- demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of principles of the criminal proceedings and of the european criminal procedural law;
- understand and use properly legal therminology related to criminal procedure;
- be able to relate the concepts learned to practical cases.

Modalità di insegnamento
Students can choose between two different course options:
a) a online course in a special Moodle platform: for each week of the course (six weeks), learning materials (slides, videos and readings) will be uploaded in the dedicated boxes you will find in the course homepage. A self evaluation exercise will be charged in the box of each week. Those who carry out at least four weekly exercises with a minimum score of 16/30 are considered attending students (for the attending students of the online course exam's questions will be based only on the learning materials stored in the special Moodle Platform)

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
The exam will consist of a written test composed of fifteen multiple-choice questions and one open-ended question.
For the attending students of the online course questions will be based on the learning materials stored in the special Moodle Platform.
For the students of the traditional course and for those registered in the online course but then not meeting the conditions to be attending students questions will be based on the Handbook of European Criminal Procedure.

Programma
After an introduction to the criminal procedural law (legal families, scope of criminal trial, adversarial systems), the focus will be on:
- parties and judges: roles, powers, duties;
- legal sources of the criminal procedural law;
- right to process, rights in the proces;
- mutual legal assistance in the European Union;
- current procedural issues: mutual recognition; transborder investigation; transborder evidence gathering; e-evidence; transfer of prisoners.
