Obiettivi formativi

The objective of the course is to provide the conceptual and analytical tools as well as the capacity to understand the causes, mechanisms and consequences of economic globalization, and, in particular, the determinants of international trade, the objectives and instruments of trade policy at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels, the role of multinational enterprises and foreign direct investment, the international monetary and financial architecture, the genesis and effects of the global financial crisis and the difficulties of the European Monetary Union.

Modalità di insegnamento

The entire course will be held online. Lessons will start on 22 February 2021 at 4pm. The Webex link, valid for the whole course, is: https://unito.webex.com/meet/francesco.abbate

The course will be delivered through a blend of different teaching tools:

  • live Webex lessons with PPT presentations
  • Q&A meetings
  • webinars on topical issues
  • presentations by academics and experts
  • assignments and presentations of terms papers by students 
  • reading and study materials
  • final exam simulations.

All materials will be made available through Moodle. It is therefore essential that all students enrol in the Moodle platform to have full access to materials, discussions and communications.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

The final exam will be oral. A mid-term test and an early exam session will also be scheduled.

Attending students can gain points by:

  • writing an individual or group term paper, which is optional, although strongly recommended
  • partecipating in seminars/webinars outside course hours

  2. Absolute and comparative advantage in international trade
  3. International trade and resource endowment
  4. Intra-sectoral trade and global value chains
  5. Objectives and instruments of trade policy: causes and effects of protectionism
  6. Multilateral and regional trade agreements: the World Trade Organization
  7. Multinational enterprises and foreign direct investment 
  8. Balance of payments, global capital flows and exchange rate determination
  9. The international monetary system and the role of the International Monetary Fund
  10. Genesis and effects of the 2008 global financial crisis and the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
  11. Optimal currency areas, the euro and the problems of the European Monetary Union
  12. Growth, sustainable development and income distribution.
