Clarifications regarding the evaluation and the definition of the overall grade

Pubblicato: Venerdì 28 giugno 2019 da Sergio Dellavalle

Dear Students,

as regards the weighting of the two Modules with reference to the definition of the overall grade, the following criteria are applied.

The score obtained with regard to Module I will remain unchanged, be improved by up to 3 points, or diminished by 1 point, on the basis of the following system:

– 1 point: fail (evaluation of the take-home essay of Module II below 40/100, according to the UK grading system; or below 18/30 according to the Italian grading system);

+/– 0 points: 3. or pass (evaluation of the take-home essay Module II between 40/100 and 49/100, according to the UK grading system; or between 18/30 and 21/30 according to the Italian grading system);

+ 1 point: 2.2. (evaluation of the take-home essay Module II between 50/100 and 59/100, according to the UK grading system; or between 22/30 and 24/30 according to the Italian grading system);

+ 2 points: 2.1. (evaluation of the take-home essay Module II between 60/100 and 69/100, according to the UK grading system; or between 25/30 and 27/30 according to the Italian grading system);

+ 3 points: 1. (evaluation of the take-home essay Module II corresponding to 70/100 or above, according to the UK grading system; or corresponding to 28/30 or above, according to the Italian grading system).

In case that the attendance requirements for Module II are not met the points assigned for Module II are diminished by one point (for example, a grade for Module II of 80/100, but without the attendance requirements having been met, means that the points assigned for Module II are not 3, but 2).

To accept the overall grade, you should sign up for one of the official exam dates and specify in the note that you want to have your overall grade recorded. You should also indicate in the note the grade and the date in which you have taken the exam of Module I, the scores obtained for Module II and whether the attendance requirements for Module II have been met.

Some of you did not pass the exam of Module II. Nonetheless, it is possible also in these cases to sign up for the official exam date and have an overall grade registered. Under these circumstances, the overall grade will be determined by the scores obtained for Module I, diminished by 1 point. While registering for the exam you should specify in the note that you opt for this procedure. However, you can also take a resit exam for Module II, whereas in this latter case you have to follow the instructions given by Prof. Eichler (jessika.eichler@unito.it; jessika.eichler@gmail.com). If you opt for this solution, when you will pass Module II an overall grade resulting from the usual weighting of the scores of both Modules will be registered following the procedure laid down above.

You may also take a resit exam for Module I on the date of one of the official exams. In case that the first attempt has been made on the 13th of March 2019, the final scores of Module I will result from the average of the scores of the exam taken on the 13th of March 2019 and the scores of the resit exam of Module I. This provision does not apply if the first attempt is made at an official exam date, starting with the 27th of May 2019 until February 2020. Once obtained the revised scores for Module I, the overall grade is determined as specified above.

As regards those who will take the exam for the first time at one of the official exam dates, the open questions to be answered during the exams will only refer to the contents of Module I. You should also specify on the header of the sheet, together with the usual general information and personal data, which modality you choose for the definition of the overall grade, i.e., whether you want to have it only determined on the basis of the scores obtained in the evaluation of Module I, diminished by one point (overall grade = scores of Module I – 1 point), or you want wait for the evaluation of Module II according to the rules laid down by Prof. Eichler. In case that you will not write down any specification, I will assume that you have chosen the first of the above-mentioned options. In case you have already passed Module II, please specify it on the sheet next to the personal data, by writing “Module II passed” (together with the scores obtained).

If you decide to wait for the evaluation of Module II according to the rules laid down by Prof. Eichler, the scores obtained for Module I will be published in the Section “Avvisi” shortly after the exam date. Afterwards, you may still waive the assessment of Module II and decide that your overall grade is only determined by the scores obtained for Module I, diminished by 1 point. In this case, to have your overall grade recorded, you have to sign up for a later exam date and specify in the note that you opt for this procedure (with the scores of Module I). If you decide to take a resit exam for Module II and wait for the results, an overall grade resulting from the usual weighting of the scores of both Modules will be registered following the procedure laid down above.

In case that you are unable or unwilling to resit the take-home exam of Module II of the course unit, but you had a positive evaluation of the take-home essay of Module II, the positive evaluation of the take-home essay of Module II can be taken into account for the determination of the overall grade according to the above-mentioned criteria. Please note that this possibility applies only to those who have passed the take-home exam, while the fulfilment of the attendance requirements for Module II, if taken alone, does not qualify for any improvement of the scores of Module I.

All the best,
