The course will offer an introduction to the common law and civil law systems and it will focus on the correct use of vocabulary and terminology of the different legal systems. It will also introduce students to the drafting techniques of legislative texts in a multilingual context and the specific use of English as lingua franca by the EU.

Students are expected to know and use in an appropriate way the legal terminology and the main legal concepts and rules belonging to both common law and civil law tradition. Students will also familiarise with the basics of legal translation in the EU multilingual context

Lesson 2 - Civil law and Common Law - Sources of Law

Lesson 3 - Civil law and Common Law Courts Structure

Lesson 4 - Civil Law and Common Law, Style and Elements of a case

Lesson 5 - Some important distinctions between Civil law and Common law legal terms

Lesson 6 - Property Law : basic elements and glossary

Lesson 7- Contract Law : basic elements and glossary 

Lesson 8 - Tort Law: basic elements and glossary

Lesson 9 - Drafting legislative texts in EU and Multilingual systems

All lectures will be in presence and attending is highly recommended.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

Written multiple-choice exam in presence at the Campus on the Moodle platform.

The knowledge will be assessed by a Multiple Choice Test of 30 questions.

The exam consists of a multiple-choice test on the Moodle Platform in Computer Room at the Campus

Students will have 30 minutes to reply to 30 multiple choice questions.

In multiple choice questions there is only one correct answer for each question. 

In order to succeed you have to reach the score of 18/30

Few days before the exam students will receive the instructions and details by email to enter into the moodle page of the exam.
